How Does a Mortar Delay Set Work?

At the chemical level, products like Fritz-Pak’s Mortar Set Retarder establish a film around a small percentage of the cement molecules. This prevents those molecules from going through the hydration process. Over time the film wears down and hydration is allowed to proceed as normal. This helps combat the effects of hot, dry weather on the mix and gives you a bit of extra time to work with the mix.
